The Quest for a Freestanding Handstand

Doing a freestanding handstand is one of my goals (one of many).  A handstand is a great strength exercise, not only for your shoulders and arms but your core strength too.  Not to mention the benefits of balance which I’ll address in a different blog.  But honestly the main reason I would want to do a handstand is not for the strength building but because it would be really cool to pop up in a handstand anywhere. 

When I first started my handstand journey I couldn’t even support my own weight upside down.  I spent tons of time upside down against the wall not even kicking up to build strength.  I was really, really excited the first time I was able to kick up.  After the first time I was able to kick-up I wanted to handstand everywhere.  At the store, at the park, a random tree, at the museum, at the zoo, anywhere I would go I’d have this urge to do a handstand. 

I have taken different yoga inversion workshops, cross fit inversion workshops, watched YouTube videos, read tips online but with all of that I am still not able to handstand away from a wall (or tree).  Each workshop taught me a different way, which is probably part of the problem.  Banana back, no banana back, look between your hands, look straight forward, feet together, feet apart, it is all so confusing and a little frustrating. 

I started doing a 365 day Instagram handstand challenge.  The good thing about it, is it made me do a handstand every day.  The bad thing is half the time I was too tired, would not warm up and would just kick up once for a picture.  I have super flexible joints and I hyperextend my elbows.  By being lazy and not taking care of myself before handstands my elbow was always in pain so I took a break from the 365 day challenge. 

I know for sure another thing that is in my way is my fear of being away from the wall.  I move away at intervals in my practice but am still a big chicken.  I wonder how long it will take me to figure out the proper form that works for me and lose my fear.  I’m going to try not to worry about that right now, I’m going to work on what I’m able to do at the present moment. When I am finally away from the wall I will proudly share and find the most obscure place to take a photo :)
